Free beer?

I just texted a friend, who now lives in Spain. He’s a good friend and used to invite me to visit his hometown.

I had such a great time in his hometown. I met his family and friends there. Many people in that town know him. And most importantly, we spent time seeing his hometown and I have learnt a lot about his hometown.

One day, we went to a bar. In the bar, one staffer provided each of us a cup of beer. That staffer was very nice and we chatted a little bit there. It was a good moment on that trip. After a while, my friend and I were ready to visit another place. And I was ready to pay for the beers. Suddenly, my friend stopped me and the staffer said no. That staffer said it was free. I was so surprised and my friend explained that he and the staffer are friends as well. The staffer is happy to meet me. So, I got a cup of beer for free and a new friend.

Well, this doesn’t happen frequently during a trip. Thankfully, I was visiting my friend and he knows a staffer from the bar. Otherwise, I don't think the beers would be free.

For me, this experience is surely amazing. Nonetheless, taking something free might not always be a good idea while traveling. In particular, if someone you don’t know offers something free, you have to be careful. You don’t know his or her intention and by taking something free, you might face other problems. For example, in a bar or club, if someone offers you a cup of wine or beer for free, you have to be careful. Of course, there are good people and generous people. Nevertheless, it’s a good way to avoid being in some trouble.
