OH! Delay

Saint Exupéry and the Little Prince

There are many delays in 2020. Events were delayed, weddings were delayed, mails were delayed and many other things were delayed. We don’t like to see delays during a trip. However, it will certainly happen if you travel a lot.

There are short delays or long delays in our life. Sometimes, we might have a 10-minute delay in a meeting. Sometimes, we might be stuck in traffic for 30 minutes. There are uncertainties in our life and these uncertainties could cause different delays.

Traveling makes me learn how to deal with delays and understand that I always have to have a plan B and don’t panic when there are delays.

The first day I traveled to Italy, it was in mid-August. I took the train from Paris to Milan and then I had to take the train from Milan to Rome. When I was waiting for the train at the Milan station, I was really anxious because I could not find the train to Rome. I truly couldn’t remember how long it took. But I do remember that when I got on the train, an Italian told me that delays were normal in Italy.

I didn’t see any strikes when I was a kid. Nonetheless, strikes are normal in some countries. Sometimes, bus drivers strike. Sometimes, metro staff strike. But, it’s fine when there are other options. However, airport workers' strikes usually cause big problems.

A few years ago, I was traveling in Lyon. When I arrived at the airport to take the return flight, it was quiet. Only one staff member at the check-in counter, I showed her my boarding pass of the return flight and she told me that no flights would take off today and she just wrote down something on my boarding pass and asked me to come back tomorrow. It was an airport workers strike. There were many people who were like me and didn’t receive any information about the flight status.

No other choices, I had to take my luggage and ask my friend to host me for one more night. The next day, there was a flight. However, there was chaos at the airport since too many people were eagerly waiting for the flights. A guy told me that his flight had been postponed twice. Well, you can imagine how many people were influenced by this strike.

It’s just one of some delays I faced when traveling. Delays are unavoidable in our life and more or less delays could happen during a trip. Sometimes, waiting is just a part of the journey.
