A call from home

I was waiting for a train in a town in the Netherlands. I had to take a transit train to the central station in Amsterdam.

Suddenly, my phone rang. I picked up the phone. It turned out that my dad was calling. He asked me if I was doing well. It was my first time traveling alone. He would like to know if I was ok. Well, I just told him that I was in the Netherlands and I was fine. I didn’t call back because it was expensive to make an international call.

In addition, there was one day. I visited a friend in Paris. I lived in his apartment, and he asked if I needed to make a phone call to my family. I can use his landline and it’s free of charge. So, I said yes. I made a phone call and my mom picked up the phone. I just wanted to let them know that I was fine.

I don’t know every traveler’s situation. Growing up, my parents asked me to make a phone call home every day when I lived in the school dormitory. It was kind of a routine. So, when I said that I was going to travel alone, they got so nervous. They didn’t believe that I could make it. But in the end, I made it.

After that, they knew that I was able to do something. So, they don’t worry that much. Nonetheless, they still worry about something as always. Well, I can’t tell if this is right or wrong. Nevertheless, with new technology, we have other options to stay in touch. For example, with the internet, we can even make a video call via several applications. And, for me, I can send some photos to my family easily and I don’t need to worry too much about the cost as it was.
