A journey of an athlete

I was working on an important project. One day, I had a meeting with a director who operated a shooting range. I was a bit late, however, we had an interesting conversation.

We talked about operating a sports complex and of course, I learned a lot from him about running a business of a shooting range. There are a lot of challenges for sure. However, he identified a way to make the business survive. Then, he talked about his career.

He was an athlete and participated in many shooting tournaments globally. And a key thing that drew my attention was about the cost. Being an athlete, he had to practice and practice. And there is always something he has to pay. Moreover, as an athlete, he has to pay the cost of participating in a tournament. For example, he indicated that he used to participate in an event in Italy. For the trip, he had to pay for many things such as flight tickets, food and accommodation. There are just so many things to pay. Hence, each time he participated in an international shooting tournament, he just spent a lot of money. Well, he told me the real number, it’s outrageous.

Listening to his story makes me think about some friends’ careers. Some of my friends are athletes. A key thing in their lives is actually to travel. However, those trips aren’t easy. Sometimes, there are many difficulties on the road. They may go to a country that they have little knowledge of. They may have to overcome jet lag. They have to learn to stay focused even though they don’t sleep well in a hotel room. There’s a lot to prepare before a trip. The cost is huge and sometimes, they have to know how to get enough funds to take a trip. That’s part of the journey.
